Jan Richter, CQO AT ZADIENT:
” STMicroelectronics’ announcement of its first 200mm silicon carbide wafer production marks another important milestone in the industrialization of the SiC ecosystem. Moving from 150mm to 200mm wafers is not simply a manufacturing upgrade — it is a strategic shift that directly impacts scalability, yield economics, and long-term competitiveness for automotive and industrial applications.
The timing is significant. Demand for high-efficiency power electronics continues to grow across electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and industrial electrification. As OEMs accelerate adoption of 800V architectures and fast-charging platforms, the pressure on the SiC supply chain is increasingly moving from innovation toward reliable high-volume manufacturing.
Europe’s growing investment in advanced SiC production capabilities also reflects a broader objective: strengthening regional semiconductor resilience in technologies considered critical for the energy transition.”
